Your Ghost

Cullen found himself in a dark place, and for a moment, he was very afraid. “Where is she?” he thought. He felt the light tug that was the thread of connection Aisling was keeping on him, and he was grateful for that. It was easy to get lost in the thoughts of another when they were not in their usual state of mind. He thought he could hear something, like music coming from down a long hallway, and he pushed toward that – he could see light coming from around what looked to be a doorway, and he pushed through and found himself at the threshold of a small bedroom.

He looked around and noted the holiday lights along the ceiling, the band posters, the black curtains and bedding, and black clothes all over the floor, and decided that this surely had been Lucee’s bedroom as a teenager. Where was she, though? He decided to sit on the bed, and he began talking to her, wherever she was.

“Lucee? Where are you? I know it feels safe here, but we need you to come back to us. Please?” He heard his voice crack a little. “We need you.”

A small pause. “I need you.”

He heard a soft noise, and then realized it was crying. He stood up and tried to pinpoint where it was coming from, and finally opened the closet door, and found Lucee curled on the floor, weeping. He sank to the floor and whispered, “I found you. I found you, and I’m not letting you go.” He reached over and managed to scoop her into his arms, where she cried into his shoulder for a while, as he stroked her hair.

She finally snuffled a bit and said in a teary voice, “I am afraid to go back, Cullen. I hurt so much, and it was so scary. I act brave but inside, I’m just a terrified little girl. And when Merrick went down and you went after, I was so angry, but it wasn’t enough! I couldn’t take down the stickman that went after Sousa and Sheridan. It won. And here I am now.”

He shushed her, gently.

“You know we’re all scared when those things happen, right? You weren’t the only one. I went after Merrick but I was frightened, I was just more driven to try and rescue him than I was afraid. I acted, I didn’t think. You are braver than you know. And if you’ll follow me out of here, I promise to show you every day how amazing you are. But you need to come with me, come back to us. Will you do that?”

She sat there a moment, her head still buried in his shoulder, then she nodded quickly, like she needed to do so before she changed her mind. He helped her up and said, “Hold my hand, and we’ll figure out how to get back out of here. Aisling will help, too. She’s keeping track of me.”

They left the room and trudged through the darkness.
